I've done plenty of US Federal work, and I agree, they pay great.
However, David's product is geared towards states and municipalities. These agencies want everything, and expect you to offer it nearly free because "it's the right thing to do." They're only second to churches as customers for earning little or no pay.
Perhaps it's rubbed off a bit onto you, David?
I don't disagree that for, what I've called the "twenty buck" guys in many previous posts, the product is a bit daunting. David, it looks (from your website's screenshots) like your product has evolved up from a VB6 app more than a decade ago. Perhaps you need a mental refresh, a conceptual shift into some (newly) basic ideas, i.e., three-tier architecture, user controls, pure object orientation of data (vs row-oriented approach), and more. You might take your research outside of LLBLGen for now, focus on a new, clean .NET approach, and come back later. I worry that your foundation of knowledge is not yet there, and no amount of mentoring in LLBLGen is going to get you ready.
Hope you understand. Good luck.
